His Presence Over His Promise

I’m not enough unless You come.
Will You meet me here again?'
Cause all I want is all You are.
Will You meet me here again?
– Here Again, Elevation Worship
I’ve always been struck by that first line: I’m not enough unless You come.
Recently, as I spent more time reflecting on this song, I was reminded of the story of Moses leading the Israelites to the Promised Land. Around this time last year, I started reading through the Old Testament and watched that story unfold with fresh eyes.
One moment that stood out so clearly and that beautifully echoes this song is when Moses says to God: “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15)
Let’s pause for a second and take in the weight of that.
Here’s the context: God had just rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, performing miracle after miracle, splitting the Red Sea, providing food in the desert, and leading them toward a land He promised them.
But then, while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving God’s commandments, the people grew impatient. They built a golden calf and started worshipping it. Can you imagine? They had just been rescued, and already, they turned their backs on the One who delivered them.
God, grieved and angry, told Moses that the people could still go into the Promised Land but He would not go with them. Instead, He’d send an angel.
And this is where Moses makes that bold, beautiful statement: “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.”
Sorry what?
God is offering Moses the very thing He promised, the land flowing with milk and honey. The fulfilment of a dream. And Moses essentially says, “Thanks, but if You’re not going, I’m not going.”
If I’m honest, if God handed me my version of the "promised land" the dream job, the breakthrough, the answered prayer I’d probably be tempted to take it and run.
But Moses? He would rather remain in the wilderness with God than step into the promise without Him. That is beyond me.
So let’s bring it to us: What promise are you holding onto right now? A new job? Community? Clarity about a big decision?
Sometimes we get so caught up in chasing the “next thing”; the job, the idealized future, the relationship, the dream, that we forget what actually matters most: His presence.
Even in the waiting, the confusion, or the unknown, we can be comforted. Because what we truly need isn’t just the breakthrough, it’s Him.
